Find local help

Free public programs exist in every county to help older adults and family caregivers. Here's where to call first.

What to ask when you call

  • What in-home services are available, and is there a waiting list?
  • Do you offer caregiver support programs, like respite, training, or counseling?
  • Can someone help us apply for Medicaid or other benefits?
  • Are there meal programs, transportation services, or adult day programs nearby?
  • Is there a long-term care ombudsman we can talk to about a facility?

In an emergency

Call 911 for medical emergencies. Call or text 988 for a mental health crisis. To report suspected elder abuse, contact your state's Adult Protective Services, which the Eldercare Locator can help you find.
